God laughs.

If one cannot tell from just looking at him, Jack is absolutely not in good health. He has needed surgery for every health problem under the sun, and eventually wrecked the use of his right arm completely after his third stroke. Jack, of course, will hardly blame himself for any of it, and instead points the finger at everything else, such as tap water, caffeine and God's will.

Diets

Jack has attempted various diets over the years, often with limited to zero results. Jack's dieting often begins with him pontificating about the importance of healthy eating and exercise. He tells us that he knows what's healthy and what isn't - he just chooses to eat large quantities of fat, grease and salt, and could totally stop any time he wants.

This is typically followed by progressively more frequent substitutions on food and avoidance of exercise, until the diet is never seen or heard from again.

Strokes

First stroke (10 October 2008):

On October 10, 2008, Jack claimed to have had his first stroke. This event, which he dramatically called the "Hospital Bill from Hell," set the stage for a series of health problems and public rants. His blog post, intended to recount a medical scare, spirals into a tirade against hospitals, insurance companies, and anyone who dared to cross him.

Symptoms and Initial Response:

Jack woke at 4:30 AM to numbness on the right side of his body, a telltale sign of a potential stroke. Instead of contacting emergency services immediately, Jack drove himself to Los Alamitos Medical Center’s emergency room. The numbness lasted around 20 minutes—a fleeting episode that can often be dismissed but is a critical warning sign.

Medical Assessment and Jack's Reaction:

Over the next four hours, the hospital conducted several tests, including bloodwork, to determine the cause of his symptoms. Jack’s frustration mounted as each test returned inconclusive. According to his own account, he began pressuring the doctors, insisting they wrap up quickly so he could leave.

When medical staff offered him medication for high blood pressure and a second pill to prevent stomach upset from the first, Jack’s reaction was dismissive: he refused both, adamant that his blood pressure was only high because of the hospital's perceived inefficiency. He rejected their suggestion that the issue might stem from an underlying condition. Instead of considering their advice, Jack made it clear that he had no intention of staying overnight, stating that he wouldn’t tolerate being woken for further tests.

Self-Discharge Decision:

Although the hospital initially planned to admit him for further observation and tests, Jack pushed for an expedited review of his results, hoping to be released before the end of the workday. By 6:30 PM, with tests showing no immediate danger, the doctors discharged him—though likely more out of exasperation than certainty. Jack’s insistence on sleeping in his own bed rather than staying for monitoring underscored his belief that he knew better than the medical professionals.

Potential Diagnosis:

Jack’s symptoms aligned with a trans-ischemic attack ('TIA'), a temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain that does not cause permanent damage but serves as a critical warning sign for future strokes. Medical guidelines stress lifestyle changes and consistent medication to reduce future risks, but Jack’s actions revealed his unwillingness to accept the gravity of his condition.

Post-Stroke Actions:

Rather than addressing his health with follow-up care, Jack directed his energy toward a billing dispute over a $100 emergency room fee. He criticized the hospital’s policies and urged his readers to contact the hospital administration on his behalf. His blog post, full of sarcastic jabs—including renaming his insurance provider "Wedon’tcare"—emphasized his grievances rather than any introspection about his health.

Second stroke (Around late June, 2011)

In late June 2011, Jack suffered a second stroke. This time, he attributed the incident to a dangerous cocktail of overwork, stress, and excessive caffeine consumption. In his explanation video, uploaded on July 9, 2011, Jack recounted the events leading up to the stroke, framing it as a lesson learned after pushing his body to the brink.

Symptoms and Stroke Incident:

The lead-up to Jack’s second stroke was marked by a relentless work schedule. Jack described working seven days a week for four years without rest, spending long nights editing videos and managing his barbecue sauce deliveries. His schedule culminated in an ill-advised marathon of errands and filming before a vacation, fuelled by multiple Starbucks coffees and an energy drink. After a grueling 11-hour workday, Jack embarked on a late-night, three-hour drive to Las Vegas with his family.

During the drive, Jack noticed his right hand falling off the steering wheel without warning—a disturbing but ignored red flag. Upon arriving in Vegas at 1:00 AM, Jack went straight to bed, but by 3:30 AM, he awoke to find his entire right side unresponsive. His arm could not lift to scratch his chest, and his right leg was immobile. Recognising the severity, Jack went to the emergency room, where doctors confirmed he had suffered a mild stroke on the left side of his brain.

What Jack Blamed:

Jack openly admitted the stroke was a result of poor choices: severe stress, sleep deprivation, and an overreliance on caffeine and energy drinks. He referred to the event as a “wake-up call from God,” acknowledging that his body had "fried its spark plugs" due to neglect. Jack took specific aim at energy drinks, describing them as “really bad” and vowing never to consume them again.

Recovery and Lifestyle Changes:

Following the stroke, Jack claimed to have made significant lifestyle changes. He stated that he eliminated caffeine and energy drinks, switched to decaf, and adopted a healthier diet. He reported improved vital signs, boasting that his blood pressure and diabetes levels had returned to near-normal levels. However, knowing Jack’s penchant for self-promotion and downplaying setbacks, it’s hard not to question the extent of these improvements. His history of minimising health warnings and spinning situations to paint a narrative of resilience suggests he may have overstated his recovery.

Despite claims of feeling healthier than ever, Jack admitted to lingering effects from the stroke, such as difficulty writing and typing. While he portrayed this as a minor inconvenience in the grand scheme of things, the fact that he still struggled with basic motor skills raises doubts about just how "recovered" he truly was.

Third stroke (Around mid-June, 2018)

In mid-June 2018, Jack suffered his third and most debilitating stroke while filming a video for his YouTube channel. This incident occurred during the making of his now-infamous Coffee Sock episode, marking a pivotal moment in his health decline. Jack later confirmed in a follow-up announcement video on July 1, 2018, that the stroke resulted in the permanent loss of the use of his right arm.

Symptoms and Stroke Incident:

The Coffee Sock video, uploaded on June 30, 2018, inadvertently documented Jack’s pre- and post-stroke condition. In the first segment of the video, Jack appeared his usual animated self as he introduced the concept of cold brew coffee. He enthusiastically described how to use a reusable cotton filter, or "coffee sock," for making a large batch of cold brew. However, at the 2:31 mark, the video transitions, and when Jack returns on screen, he is wearing different clothes, speaking with a subtle slur, and visibly avoiding the use of his right arm. During the taste test, Jack only uses his left hand to lift the coffee cup and slurs out a barely coherent sentence: "This is how I drink coffee all summer long...on ice...cold brew...is really big."

Confirmation of the Stroke:

The following day, on July 1, 2018, Jack uploaded a separate video titled "Announcement" to address his audience directly. In this somber update, he confirmed that he had suffered a stroke and lost the use of his right arm. Despite this setback, Jack framed the announcement in an oddly upbeat tone, assuring viewers that he would slow down but continue creating content. His gratitude to fans was peppered with a business pitch, as he reminded them that his sauces were available on Amazon Prime.

What Jack Blamed:

While Jack did not explicitly blame the stroke on any particular trigger in the announcement, his past habits painted a clear picture. Known for his reliance on energy drinks, long filming days, and unhealthy lifestyle choices, Jack had previously switched from Red Bull to Bang Energy, seemingly oblivious to the fact that Bang contained nearly three times the caffeine. His dismissal of his high blood pressure as a major contributing factor further suggested an ongoing pattern of downplaying medical risks.

Impact of the Stroke:

The third stroke proved life-altering for Jack, as it permanently impaired his right side. In the announcement, he acknowledged that he could no longer write or type efficiently and relied heavily on his left hand for daily activities. Despite these limitations, Jack attempted to maintain a sense of normalcy, promising fans that his trademark sarcasm and bloopers would remain a staple of his show.

Fourth stroke (26-27 January 2023, latest stroke)

In around late January 2023, roughly the 26th or 27th, Jacksuffered his fourth stroke. The incident triggered widespread speculation among fans and critics, especially after cryptic posts from his family surfaced online. Jack’s son, Garrett, who lives in Thailand, was the first to hint at the health crisis through a series of Instagram stories. The news spread quickly through the Foodjacks community—people known for documenting Jack’s public and private mishaps.

The Investigation:

Concerned followers pieced together information from social media posts, particularly from Carolyn Flanders, Jack’s mother-in-law. Carolyn’s updates vaguely mentioned that a close family member had been admitted to the ICU. One of her photos, which included a car parked at the Tristar Skyline Medical Center in Tennessee, became a crucial clue. By analysing the background details, Foodjacks determined that Jack had been admitted to this facility for emergency care.

Initial Speculations and Jack’s Confirmation:

Rumours initially suggested that Jack had suffered a heart attack, as many pointed out his history of poor cardiovascular health. However, months later, Jack himself addressed the situation in a YouTube video titled Stroke Update on Jack (uploaded on April 8, 2023). In the video, Jack confirmed that it was indeed a stroke, marking his fourth such incident.

How the Fourth Stroke Happened:

In his update, Jack recounted how he had been sitting at the dining table browsing for recipes on his iPad when he felt an intense pressure behind his ear. The sensation spread up his head and down his neck, quickly escalating beyond typical sinus pressure. Instead of calling an emergency ambulance service, Jack opted to call his son, Jack Jr., and told him he needed to go to the hospital. According to Jack, Jack Jr. rushed to the house, driving at "breakneck speed" to get him to the emergency room—a decision that raised concerns among fans, as driving at high speed in a crisis could have resulted in a catastrophic accident. Many critics pointed out that if Jack had called an ambulance instead, he may have received immediate medical intervention that could have mitigated the long-term effects of the stroke.

Jack described the experience as surreal, noting that this was the first time he had experienced a stroke while fully conscious. His speech in the video was slightly slurred, and he admitted that his vision was still blurry, though he tried to “fake” normalcy for the camera.

Hospitalisation and Nursing Home Stay:

Following his admission, Jack spent an extended period in the ICU before being moved to a nursing home for further observation and rehabilitation. Despite the seriousness of his condition, Jack’s characteristic stubbornness and disregard for medical advice surfaced. Reports emerged that Jack convinced his wife, Tammy, to smuggle in fast food during his stay—an ironic choice given his ongoing recovery from a major stroke.

Recovery and Public Updates:

In his April 2023 video, Jack emphasised that he was allowed occasional outings and had resumed making content, including movie reviews. He reassured viewers that his trademark sarcastic commentary and Jack on the Go episodes would return, though he acknowledged he was still not fully back to his old self.

Jack’s history of deflecting health concerns with humour was evident throughout the video. He attempted to frame the ordeal as a learning experience while simultaneously downplaying its severity. However, the signs of his struggle—blurred vision, slurred speech, and limited mobility—were clear.
